There is a dump site about 15 minutes from my house. Up until a few years ago, people lived at the dump, and sifted through the garbage. Today the government has set up low income housing for the people to live in, but they still spend their days looking through the trash. Every year there is an organization named Extreme Response, which has a Christmas party for this particular dump site. I was able to help as a volunteer this year. Over 3,000 people showed up to the party at the dump, and we had around 500 volunteers. Each volunteer was assigned a different section to help in; there were crafts, games, Santa pictures, face painting, and more. I was placed in the games area. It was set up like a big fair. I was so impressed by how organized the whole event was. Each person entered and was given a bracelet, a ticket for their photo with Santa, and a plastic baggy with a string to hang around his/her neck for the candy they won as prizes for the games. My particular game was a Frisbee toss through hula hoops. I held a hoola hoop for about 5 hours and cheered on the participants. It was quite entertaining as most of the people were indigenous. Therefore, they had never seen nor thrown a Frisbee before. All of the adults joined in too and were very happy to win candy. It was an amazing event to be part of. At the end, as the people left, they were given dry food to take with them. Within 20 minutes, the entire place was broken down and cleaned up. Great teamwork!
